Left-handed Chair

Gerrit Rietveld’s Red and Blue Chair, designed in 1918 and included in the De Stijl movement, is probably the best known and most cited piece of design in the art world. Eager to perpetuate the tradition of copying my masters and to make my own contribution to this story, I drew it with my left hand and then built it with scrupulous respect for this drawing. The result is both a very bad copy and an object infinitely more peculiar and complex to realize than Rietveld’s.
This prototype was then given to a carpenter, who reproduced it in five copies, creating a limited edition that was very much at odds with the (unsuccessful) project of mass production ambitioned both by Rietveld and by the entire modernist movement.
